Most rallies are built from a simple rhythm: pass, set, attack. The receiving player controls the first ball, the setter shapes the second, and an attacker tries to score with the third.
First Contact: Pass
The pass is the foundation. A good pass gives the setter options and keeps the opponent’s block from reading the play too early.
Second Contact: Set
The set turns control into a chance to score. Setters choose tempo, location, and attacker. A fast set can beat the block, but only if the pass gives enough control.
Third Contact: Attack
The attack can be a hard spike, a controlled roll shot, a tip, or a deep placement. Elite attackers do not only hit harder; they read the block and choose the smartest finish.
What To Watch
Watch how the first contact changes the whole rally. A pass near the net opens the full offense. A pass far from target often forces a predictable high ball.
